Foshan is the birthplace of Cantonese Opera, with an old history,dating back to 400 years ago, which the middle period of the Ming Dynasty.Mainly prevailing in the districts of speaking cantonese region,Hongkong and Macao.More over,it also very popular in the Southeast Asia and the Pacific,the same as some American regions where the Guangdong overseas Chinese people live.In some countries,such as the Southeast Asia, there are also have some generations of artists,opera organizations and some related associations.

 

Chao opera also named as the Chaozhou drama,is the division one of the Chinese ancient Song Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty. Chao opera was very prosperous in the east of Guangdong, Hongkong,Macao and the Southeast Asia.In the Ming Dynasty,this opera had formed a special local drama cultural.

 

Han opera,once named as “Waijiang drama”,which dating back to 400 years ago.During the period of the Qing Dynasty,Waijing drama came into being in Chaozhou and Shantaou,Guangdong province.Later,combined with the special chinese tune and drama,it formed the Guangdong Waijing drama.Afer 1949,the name of Guangdong Han opera is commonly used by the people.

 

About the traditional Cantonese Operas, there was “Yi Peng Xue” ,appeared in the early times. After 1868, there appeared “Huang Hua Shan”. In the mid term of of Qing Dynasty “Shi Lin Ji Ta” appeared,etc. During the period of “GD-HK”, “Ze Wang Zi”appeared. Some influential operas include “Pingui Bie Yao”, “Fengyi Pavillion”, “West River Meeting”, “Zhao Zilong Urging Return”, “Lotus Lantern”, “Luo Cheng Letter” and modern opera of “Changes in the Mountain Village”. Some of the operas have been made into movies, like “Searching Academy” and “Guan Hanqing” etc.
