Lusheng festival in Gulong
Lusheng festival is one of the most ceremonious festivals of ethnic Miao groups in Gulong and CongAnjiang. At the Lusheng festival, All the Miao people come together from different villages to celebrate this great traditional event.
Colorful activities
Apart from the wonderful dance and music, there are also lots of activates, such as bull-fighting, horsing, basketball match, mountain-climbing, chess-playing, etc. Now the activity is not only popular in Guizhou province but also in Yunnan and Sichuan province.
Hundreds of Miao boys play Lusheng in group simultaneously. The Miao girls dress up in silver-decorated clothes and head ornaments, singing and dancing together to the music in a circle after another. The festival attracts thousands upon thousands of visitors to come each year.
About Lusheng
Lusheng is a reed musical instrument with multiple bamboo pipes, each fitted with a free reed, which are fitted into a long blowing tube made of hardwood.
It usually with five or six pipes of different pitches, and is thus a polyphonic instrument. The sizes of lusheng ranging from very small to several meters in length, the performers often dance and swing the instrument from side to side while playing.
This colorful ethnic ceremony is performed to bring hope for the favorable harvest in the coming year, as well as good health. The ceremony are both exciting and full of competition, the boys try to show their skill and wisdom to win the admiration of girls. And it is a good chance for the youth to express their love toward one another.
