Shamian Island
Shamian Island is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Guangzhou. It is a great historic site influenced by the western culture.
Shamian Island is a beautiful sandbank island, located in the Liwan District of Guangzhou city, and lies on the north bank of the Pearl River. "Shamian" literally means "sandy surface" in Chinese. The island covers an area of 0.3 square kilometers.
Shamian island is surrouned by water, from the ancient times, it has been a tourist attraction. The island boasts of many beautiful trees and pleasant environment, as well as the pretty expensive buildings with the unique old shapes. It is very nice to walk along the Pearl River, Xianghai Concert Hall and Guangdong Art Museum are also around this area.
There are some luxurious hotels in this area, such as the Victory Hotel, Shamian Hotel, White Swan Hotel, etc. And there are also some excellent entertainment facilities, like Guangzhou International Seamen's Club, Shamian Tennis Court, Shamian Swimming Pool and so on.
Shamian Island is not only a great historic site but an important port for Guangzhou's foreign trade from Song Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. Now the island with eight major roads and streets, such as Shamian North Street, Shamian Street and Shamian South Street, etc.
The most worth mentioning on Shamian is
its restricted planning area, which protected
by the state as key historical relics, including
the architectural complex built during the concession period in Shamian's modern times. This area became concession in 1859, and afterwards the British, French, American, Italian, Netherlands, German, Japanese and Portuguese set up consulates, banks and trade offices one after another. Many of the old buildings are of Western classic layout.
