Chinese folk dance first appeared more than 5000 years ago and is a by-product of long historical development and profound artistic culture. Its origin lies mainly in the movements and dance reflecting people's daily life, festival activities and customs.

 

Dynamic Yunnan consists of seven parts with varied themes including Cloud, Sun, Moon, Forests, Fire, Mountain and Feather. In the great shows, almost everything that can be held by hands or a mouth will be used to play musical instruments, including hoes, spike tooth rakes, as well as water and stone mills. Over 100 kinds of folk instruments of ethic groups in Yunnan will be moved onto the stage, which will present original sounds of Yunnan for the audience.

 

Yang spent over a year going far into Yunnan Province, which is home to 51 of China's 55 ethnic groups, to collect and sort out folk music and dance pieces and seek out talented dancers and singers. The performers are local peasant farmers Yang discovered in outlying villages of Yunnan and most of them are from ethnic groups including Yi, Miao, Tibetan, Dai, Bai, Va and Hani.

 

The Song and Dance of the Huayao Tribe of Yi ethnic group, a bright spot of Scene Two, arrested the audience not only with the splendid singing but also the beautiful, graceful costumes, all sewed up by those singing girls themselves, each set costing four to five years.

Yang Liping

 

Dynamic Yunnan exhibits the most indigenous, vivid and original ethnic folk art. It was directed and choreographed by a famous Chinese performing artist, Yang Liping. Yang is from Xishuangbanna of Yunnan Province. She began her career at the age of 13 and has been dancing for more than 30 years, and has well known nationwide for 'peacock dancing' years ago.

 

Yang is known as the "sorceress" of dance and the "Goddess of Dance" in Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Her pure and mellow dance style is a result of her unique figure, intelligence and artistic inspirations from the aboriginal and natural cultural landscape.

 

"All my inspiration came from the folk dancing and singing of my ethnic folks, dancing and singing are just the natural expression way of their affection and inner world feelings. When I was young, my grandma told me that dancing is a way of communicating with god. Finally, I realized what she meant after dancing for so many years. Now when I am dancing, I have the feeling that god is touching my hands and arms. This is how my soul gets comfort and peace" said Yang.
