Overview
A nice respite from the busy streets is visiting the New Territories and its outlying islands. Many visitors are surprised that there's more to Hong Kong than the island and Kowloon. Its rural areas and nature reserves are a world away from the glam and glitter of urban Hong Kong. This is also Hong Kong's spiritual side; there are plenty of monasteries and temples to explore.

Culture Relics
There are plenty of monasteries and temples to explore. Not far from Tsuen Wan is a beautiful Taoist temple, the Yuen Yuen Institute. Nearby is Hong Kong's highest mountain, the Big Misty Mountain. At 957m it's a manageable climb and you're rewarded with a grand view. Another intriguing monastery is the Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island. Next to the temple is the Tian Tan Buddha-this Buddha's claim to fame is its size: it's the world's largest outdoor bronze Buddha statue. There's a great view of the surrounding hills after climbing the stairs to reach the Buddha.
Beaches of New Territories
If you've got time on your hands, then venture out and explore the rural side of Hong Kong in New Territories, especially its beaches. There are fantastic beaches and amazing treks to be made in the green mountains. The Shek O Big Wave Bay, dotted with beautiful beaches, on the eastern side of the New Territories is a great place for sun worshippers. It's possible to reach this area by taxi or bus from Sai Kung to the Sai Kung East Country Park, but that leaves an hour of tough walking. A better option is to rent a boat in Sai Kung-it's a beautiful sail, which passes stunning views of white beaches, red rocks and soaring hills.
There are more than 200 smaller islands in New Territories area. Going to Tap Mun Chau Island will transport you to another age-you won't believe that one of the world's busiest cities is right around the corner. Stepping off the ferry and you arrive in a small fishing village with scenery reminiscent of a Norwegian fjord, though quite a bit warmer. All about the island, deeply tanned fisherman lay there catch out in the sun to dry-their clothes a far cry from th ebusiness suits seen in Central. Walks around the small island are quite tranquil.
