It was an imperial resort area in the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), well-known for its plenty of historical sites, especially the Mountain Resort and the Eight Outer Temple ( world cultural heritage sites) which are renowned both at home and abroad. Chengde, originally called Rehe, means hot river. In 1703, it was chosen by the Kangxi Emperor as the location for his summer residence. The city is home to large populations of ethnic minorities, Mongol and Manchu in particular.

 

Chengde Tourism

 

In 1994, Chengde Mountain Resort and Eight Outer Temples were listed as the world cultural heritage sites, which have contributed towards Chengde being one of famous cities in the world. The Mountain Resort, built throughout the 18th century, was used by the Yongzheng and Qianlong Emperors as their summer residence. The Eight Outer Temples, the largest royal temple complex in the world, are located to the east and north of the Mountain Resort. The temples have many large parks with lakes, pagodas and palaces, and were built in diverse architectural styles, such as the Han, Mongolian and Tibetan.

 

Chengde Transportation

 

Chengde has convenient transportation, although there is only a small-scale airport. There are regular charter flights between Beijing and Chengde that only take one hour. In addition, Chengde railway and expressway links many cities of China, such as Beijing, Tianjin, Qinhuangdao, Liaoning, Shenyang, Baotou and Inner Mongolia, etc. The best choice for getting around Chengde city is by taxis due to their convenience and inexpensiveness.
